Yoga is an ancient science that combines various mental and physical disciplines. It emerged 2500 years ago in India and is now successful in giving general wellness and well-being to everyone who practises it on a daily basis. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit verb Yuja. It implies to join, to come to a conclusion, or to agree. It represents the union of mind and body, or the union of Jiva and Shiva (soul and the universal spirit). Yoga is a broad word with a lot of different meanings. Yoga is divided into many colleges or schemes. Dnyanayoga (Yoga through knowledge), Bhaktiyoga (Yoga through devotion), Karmayoga (Yoga through action), Rajayoga (Royal or ultimate Yoga), and Hathayoga (Yoga through action) are the five types of yoga (Yoga by balancing opposite principles of body). However, the word Yoga would have a wider meaning when it comes to Yoga Philosophy, which is discussed at the conclusion of this post.

Asana and Pranayama are two types of yoga poses.

Let’s take a closer look at Hathayoga’s two primary elements, Asana and Pranayama.

  1. a) Asana (posture):

Asana refers to establishing and sustaining a body position for as long as one’s body requires. When performed correctly and in accordance with the rules outlined above, asana has tremendous physical and psychological benefits. Asanas are regarded as the first phase in the practise of Pranayama. The practise of Asana brings opposing concepts in the body and mind into balance. It also aids in the removal of inertia. The benefits of Asana are increased as it is practised over a prolonged period of time. Asana should be healthy, consistent, and enjoyable. The following is a list of general guidelines for performing Asana.

  1. Pranayama (breathing exercises)

Pranayama is one of the most effective methods for overcoming emotional and physical ailments. Pranayama refers to the practise of controlling and prolonging one’s breath. Prana is the Sanskrit word for breath. It may also be translated as “living power.” Ayama is a Sanskrit word that implies “controlling” or “lengthening.” Exhalations in Pranayama are twice as long as inhalations, much as a pendulum takes twice as long to return to its original location. Through regulating movement, the key goal of Pranayama is to offer mental equilibrium and restrain impulses. Breathing is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. The domain of volition is expanded by putting the spontaneous mechanism of breathing under mental regulation. Pranayama connects the worlds of Bahiranga (exoteric) and Antaranga (introspective or esoteric) Yoga. Pranayama is appropriate for a body that has been stabilised by Asana and cleansed by Kriya (cleansing processes). Pranayama, on the other side, trains the mind and body for Yoga meditation and spiritual practises like Dhyana, Dharana, and Samadhi. Pranayama raises blood oxygen levels, which refreshes and rejuvenates the brain and nerves on a physical basis.
